2010 Youth Girls Olympic Games- African Qualifications- Day 5

Egypt girls secure the Youth Olympic Games berth

Cairo, Egypt, March 24, 2010- The Egyptian Girls volleyball team booked their ticket at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010 later this year after winning the African Qualification tournament here at Cairo Stadium Complex after they edged out Rwanda 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-11) in the fifth and final day of the 6 nation round robin tournament on Wednesday. Tunisia finished second in the final ranking after they topped South Africa in straight sets (25-11, 25-13, 25-16), while Kenya ended third after a brave performance winning RD Congo 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-11, 15-9).
Egypt leads the six nation tournament at the end to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore from August 14-26 later this year, with ten points from a win- loss ratio of 5-0 followed by Tunisia with nine points and Kenya with eight points.
The matches were attended by CAVB President Dr. Amr Elwani, Referee Delegate Hassan Ahmed and the representative of the Egyptian Olympic Committee Mona Abdel Karim, FEVB President Aly El Sergany and CAVB Technical Director Howyda Mondy.
The competition will feature three matches in the final day as Egypt meets Rwanda seeking for a qualification victory while Tunisia plays South Africa aiming a defeat for the Egyptian team to keep their qualification hopes. RD Congo faces Kenya in a ranking match.


Egypt vs. Rwanda

Egypt cruised past the struggling Rwandan team 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-11) in 60 minutes to win the tournament without dropping a set. The match started very competitive in the first set when the Rwandan team showed very high performance in defense and attacks but later the Egyptian team fully do minted the match to win easily the second and third sets. Yamin Hussein led the match scorers with 13 points.
The match started with a very exciting performance from both teams as the Rwandan team surprised the hosts with a disciplined defense and block led by the libero Beatrice Mahoro and the efficient spiker Regine Feza. Egypt girls quickly took the matter seriously as Yassmin Hussein worked well in spiking from position 4 to lead 8-6 at the first technical timeout FTT. The Rwandan performance rose to the top as they decreased the point deficit gradually till they led for the first time 16-15 at STT. The Egyptian team regained the rhythm as the blockers worked very well to stop the Rwandan attacks till Egypt won the set 25-20.
The second set showed a good start for Egypt to lead 5-1 before Feza returned to her unstoppable hits that decreased the Egyptian dominance till Egypt came ahead 8-4 at the FTT. The Egyptian team continued their double score series when they were ahead 16-8 at the STT due to the spikes of Salma El Mohandes from position 2 and Yassmin from position 4. Egypt continued the same rhythm although the coach of the Rwandan team made some substitutions to win the set 25-12.
The third set started with frequent aces from the Egyptian setter shorok to lead 5-0 that made the Rwandan team disturbed and forced their coach to call a timeout to regain the confidence. The Egyptian team led the match completely to win the set 25-11 and the match in straight sets.

Kenya vs. RD Congo

Kenya rebounded twice from one set behind to win the tournament’s only tiebreaker over RD Congo 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-11, 15-9) after two hours of exciting volleyball. RD Congo started the match aggressively in blocking and spiking to win the first set before the Kenyans returned back to draw 1-1. Congo repeated their lead 2-1 before the Kenyan performance raised to the utmost to win the fourth set and the tiebreak. The Kenyan star Valentine Jepkoech was the match scorer (19 pts).
RD Congo team started the match as usual with their optimum performance in the first set as they used their block well against the Kenyan attacks through Jolie Mbombo and Niclette Mababgani to win the set 25-21.
The second set showed improvement of the Kenyan combinations led by the setter Ebby Muscots that succeeded to lead the attacks to deceive the block and thus the better side won the set 25-22 and the score returned back to the draw 1-1.
Again the RD Congo blockers did very well in the third set specially the middle blocker Jolie Mbombo who is one of the best centers in the competition that made the difference with her impermeable block. Congo wing spiker Anitha Atandgo sent her unstoppable hits that weren’t tolerated by the the Kenyans as Congo won the set 25-20.
The fourth set was the best for the Kenyans who adjusted their backline defense as well as improved the reception that allowed them to build up the attacks through Egaly Kulove and Nancy Mulonza and they succeeded to win the set widely 25-11 to extend the match to tiebreak.
In the tiebreak the Kenyan team extracts all the power in the spike services and hits from all the net position to change the court at 8-5. The Kenyans maintain their dominance in all the net actions to win the tiebreak 15-9 and the match 3-2.

Tunisia vs. South Africa
Tunisia edged out South Africa 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-16) to secure the second position in the qualification tournament. The left handed Tunisian spiker Fatma Gtari was the match star not only with her 13 points scored that put her as the match scorer but with her spirit and leadership in the court.
The Tunisian team overwhelmed the first set through the different combinations led by the setter Nihel Kebaier who set to the wing spikers using the undisciplined South African blocks. Fatma Gtari spiked from position 4 aided by Maroua Boughanmi from position in position 2 and Tunisia found it easy to win the set 25-11.
The second set showed a little improvement in the South Africa performance through the better reception as they built up the attacks to score some points but again Tunisia stopped the attacks through the blockers Rahma Snossi and Hayfa Aidi to win the set 25-13.
Tunisia led widely in third set through the efficient spikes of the opposite Boughanmi and the steady performance of her colleagues to win the set 25-16 and the match in straight sets
