3 killed in Coltan mine in Southern Rwanda

Kigali: Some three people died Tuesday morning in Rukoma sector (Kamonyi district) after a coltan mine they were working collapsed on them – leaving scores with serious injuries, report say.

Witnesses said at about 7am, a wall of soil and stones collapsed as six people dug in a coltan mine. Despite frantic efforts by fellow miners, they only saved three who are said to be in serious condition in hospital in southern Rwanda.

Local officials told state radio that the mines are illegal which explains the poor safety measures at the small mines. There are many coltan mines in the area mainly controlled by the owner of the piece of land in which the mine is found.

Such accidents have been common in the area, according to residents and officials. Since 2000, some 10 people have died including women.
