TP Mazembe thrown out of CECAFA

Kigali: Trouble-causing Congolese team TP Mazembe has been forced out of the CECAFA Kagame Cup in Kigali following an outbreak of chaos in which they beat up match officials and Rwandan police officers, RNA reports.

On Saturday evening TP Mazembe was facing off bitter rivals APR FC of Rwanda in the group match when suddenly the Congolese team started crying fowl over an off-side whistle on them.

Masembe attacked the Ethiopian referee who responded with a red card for one of his attackers. The Congolese team went on rampage beating up the referee and his Burundian and Ugandan linesmen, as well as Rwandan police officers.

Following the chaos that last about 15minutes, the referee chose to halt the match. Immediately CECAFA officials went into a stormy meeting where they decided to throw out TP Mazembe – which is the current African club champions.

Djibouti team Telecom which was in the same group with APR and Mazembe will now take the place of the Congolese for the quarter-final slot, according to the CECAFA decision.

The Mazembe delegation left Sunday morning for their home-base in Lubumbashi.
